Dr Sonya Burgess is an accomplished and internationally renowned Interventional Cardiologist and has been working in Sydney as a consultant cardiologist since 2014. Dr Burgess is a 2019-2021 SCAI Emerging Leader Fellowship Program member and is 1 of only 19 female interventional cardiologists in Australia and New Zealand. Dr Burgess has a medical degree, biochemistry degree, and PhD in cardiology (focused on the treatment of heart attacks and in particularly multi-vessel disease in STEMI). She has a particular interest in STEMI, multivessel disease, the residual SYNTAX score, and incomplete revascularization, spontaneous coronary artery dissection, cardiovascular disease in women, and in patients with diabetes, and has multiple publications on cardiology workforce diversity. She is regular faculty at major national and internation conferences, a member of the CSANZ interventional council, a cofounder of the Women in interventional cardiology of Australia and New Zealand (WiiCAN) and Chairs the Cardiac society of Australia and New Zealand Women in Cardiology (WIC) groups. In addition to performing angioplasty and diagnostic angiography she reports stress ECHOs, transthoracic ECHOs, Holter monitors, and exercise treadmill tests. Dr Burgess is also an academic cardiologist with over 110 peer reviewed publications, including publications in high impact medical and cardiology journals NEJM (New England Journal of Medicine), JACC (Journal of the American College of Cardiology), Circulation, JAMA Cardiology, AHJ (American Heart Journal) , AJC (American Journal of Cardiology), HLC (Heart Lung and Circulation), and IMJ (Internal Medical Journal). Research she led is cited in 2023 ESC guidelines, and the European Society of Cardiology: Cardiovascular Disease Statistics 2019 and in the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr Burgess serves on multiple national and international committees, and editorial boards. Sonya takes great pride in providing patient centered evidence-based care and is a warm, kind and caring cardiologist.
